This audiobook narrated by Katherine Fenton makes a provocative and timely case for how the science of genetics can help create a more just and equal societyIn recent years, scientists like Kathryn Paige Harden have shown that DNA makes us different, in our personalities and in our health--and in ways that matter for educational and economic success in our current society. In The Genetic Lottery, Harden introduces readers to the latest genetic science, dismantling dangerous ideas about racial superiority and challenging us to grapple with what equality really means in a world where people are born different. Weaving together personal stories with scientific evidence, Harden shows why our refusal to recognize the power of DNA perpetuates the myth of meritocracy, and argues that we must acknowledge the role of genetic luck if we are ever to create a fair society. Reclaiming genetic science from the legacy of eugenics, this groundbreaking book offers a bold new vision of society where everyone thrives, regardless of how one fares in the genetic lottery.

How has the labour market changed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic? How have we worked in the past, and how will our employment change in the future? In discussion with interviewer David Edmonds, Melanie Simms makes a distinction between work, which can be applied to multiple elements of our lives, and employment, a subsection of work.Simms also notes that the idea of working from home is only half of the story following the way in which we work after the emergence of COVID-19. She explains that there seems to be a sizeable group of people who have left the labour market completely during the pandemic, particularly women who are also mothers. In addition, across all sectors, the vast majority of people over age 50 who have left the workforce over the past 18 months will struggle to re-join the workforce.During this Social Science Bites Podcast, Simms outlines her use of both qualitative and quantitative data from, for example, government annual surveys and interviews with workers and policymakers to collect information on work and employment in the United Kingdom. Her research comments on areas such as how a lack of childcare regularly creates problems for working women and how the workforce is aging due to older people staying in the labour market longer and younger people spending longer in education, thus entering the workforce at an older age.
